A listing that says "Bakkhali" can mean any of these three. Some listings even sit closer to Namkhana than to the beach. Always ask for the exact distance to the beach in metres, and open the location on a map before you pay.

1. Government Tourist Lodges
West Bengal Tourism runs lodges in this belt, including at Bakkhali and at Henry's Island. These properties sit on good plots with plenty of open space and mature trees, which private hotels rarely get.
Good for: families, guests who value location and space over interiors, budget conscious travellers.
Be ready for: basic and functional rooms, fixed dining hours, slower service, and an online booking system that requires patience. Rooms sell out early for winter weekends and holidays.
2. Private Hotels Near the Beach
The largest category. Two to four storey buildings, a mix of AC and non AC rooms, an in house restaurant, and a caretaker style operation rather than a trained hotel team.
Quality varies enormously between properties that look identical in photos. Read recent reviews only, not reviews from three years ago, because management changes often in this belt.
Good for: couples and small families who want the beach within walking distance.
Be ready for: thin walls, water pressure issues at peak occupancy, and noise on holiday weekends.
3. Budget Lodges and Guest Houses
Simple rooms, often non AC, sometimes without a lift. Some run under branded budget aggregators and some run independently.
Good for: short one night halts, backpackers, groups of friends.
Be ready for: minimal housekeeping, limited hot water, and photos that flatter the room considerably. Ask for a photo of the actual room number they will give you.
4. Resorts with a Pool
A handful of properties in the belt offer a swimming pool, garden and better landscaping. These sit at the top of the local price ladder.

5. Village Homestays Outside Bakkhali

Good for: travellers who want food and calm rather than a beach view, families with elderly members, longer stays.
Be ready for: a drive to the beach, no shops next door, and a slower pace that some people love and some find dull.
What Sea Facing Actually Means Here
This deserves its own section, because the phrase misleads more travellers than anything else in Bakkhali.
A thick casuarina plantation runs between the road and the water along much of the beach. That belt protects the coast, and it also blocks the view. So a genuine unobstructed sea view from a room stays rare. Many rooms sold as sea facing give you a partial view through trees, a view over rooftops, or a view of the road with the sea somewhere beyond.
None of this makes the hotel bad. The beach still sits close, the sea breeze still reaches you, and Bakkhali remains lovely. The problem is only the expectation gap.
Before you pay extra for a sea facing room, do this. Ask the hotel to send a photo taken from that specific room's window, on the day you enquire. If they send a stock photo or refuse, treat the sea facing label as marketing and book the cheaper room instead.
Season by Season: Prices and What to Expect
Tariffs in Bakkhali swing more sharply than in most Bengal destinations, because demand concentrates into a few weekends.
November to February, peak season. Best weather by far. Cool mornings, comfortable afternoons, clear skies. Rooms cost the most and sell out weeks ahead. Winter weekends, Christmas week and New Year command the highest rates of the year, often two to three times the weekday rate.
October and March, shoulder season. Pleasant weather, moderate crowds, easier booking, better negotiation. Many regular visitors consider this the smart window.
April to June, hot season. Humid days, strong sun, low crowds. Rooms cost the least. An AC room stops being a luxury and becomes a requirement. Mornings and evenings still work well.
Monsoon, roughly late June to September. Heavy rain, dramatic skies, very green surroundings, lowest tariffs. Boat trips get cancelled and the sea turns rough. Book flexible cancellation if you travel now.
Festival spikes. Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Christmas and New Year behave like a separate season. Rates jump, advance payment turns non refundable, and minimum night rules appear. Book two months ahead for these dates.

- Whether the rate includes food, and the per plate charge if it does not.
- AC or non AC, and whether AC runs all day or only at night.
- Power backup. Supply cuts happen in this belt. Ask what runs during a cut.
- Hot water, by geyser or by bucket, and the timing if it is limited.
- Parking, if you drive down.
- Check in and check out timing, because some properties enforce a strict 11 am checkout.
- Cancellation policy in writing on WhatsApp, not verbally.
- A working phone number that someone actually answers. Test it before you pay.
Take screenshots of every answer. If something goes wrong at the property, that chat history settles the argument quickly.

How to Reach Bakkhali and Namkhana
By car. Bakkhali sits roughly 125 to 130 km from Kolkata, about 3.5 hours in normal traffic. The last stretch runs on narrower roads, so leave early.
By train. Take a Sealdah to Namkhana local, about 2.5 hours. From Namkhana station, buses and totos run to Bakkhali. Mayer Bari sits 14 km from the station, about 15 minutes by car or 40 minutes by toto.
By bus. Direct buses run from Esplanade. For us, get down at the Rajnagar Biswambhar High School stop, then a 2 km toto ride.
